BASKETBALL COVER7

COTTONDALE – Gadsden City dropped its season opener 48-46 at the defending Class 6A state champions Paul Bryant on Tuesday.

The Titans started the game hot and jumped out to a 20-6 lead with 6:22 left in the second quarter. Darien Hollis had nine points for Gadsden City during the run.

But a Stampede dunk got the crowd at Bryant High School on their feet, and the Titans struggled the remainder of the quarter.

Bryant ended the first half on an 18-2 run to take a 24-22 lead into the half.

“I feel like our guys may have got star-struck when they got a few dunks on us,” Gadsden City coach Reginald Huff said. “Our guys got a little out of character on offense and stopped going to what was working.”

The Titans kept it close the remainder of the way through and had a chance to tie it late.

Down by two, Jaylen Cole drove the ball and fed it to Mykel Woods as time was winding down. Woods’ contested layup was just off the mark while Kameron Burnett’s putback missed as well as time expired.

Coachspeak

“My main thing is, we still have to get tough — mentally tough, physically tough — to handle situations like that. When the other team is bigger than us, we can’t let a little thing like a dunk bother us. … If we are going to be a championship team, we got to know how to adjust.” — Huff
