Gadsden City girls trample Stampede 59-37 in opener

BASKETBALL COVER6

COTTONDALE — Gadsden City girls basketball used a big second half to win its season opener 59-37 at Paul Bryant on Tuesday night.

The Titans and Stampede were tied at 24 at the half, but Gadsden City’s depth proved to be too much for Bryant to handle.

Gadsden City coach Jeremy Brooks continuously rotated five girls in and five girls out to wear down the Stampede.

“That’s one of the game plans that we are going to try to incorporate this year,” Brooks said. “We want to use our depth.”

It worked out well in the first game of the year as the Titans outscored the Stampede 17-4 in the third quarter to take a 41-28 lead into the final quarter.

Gadsden City continued to pour it on in the fourth as Bryant scored just nine points to the Titans’ 18.

Star of the Night

Kenya Gueye, who primarily was a defensive specialist last season, stepped up with 14 points for Gadsden City. She was the lone Titan in double figures.

By the Numbers

9 — Nine of Gadsden City’s 13 girls on the roster scored. … 5 — Made field goals for Bryant in the second half. … 4 — Players for the Titans that at least scored eight points. The scoring was balanced, which is what Brooks is looking for.

They Said It

“That’s what we try to do all the time. Just use our speed and wear people down. So they just get tired and we play how we played and keep it up tempo.” — Gueye

Coachspeak

“We played all 13 girls, but 11 or 12 got pretty good distributed minutes. Each team is different and we are a little bit different team this year than we have been in the past few. So we just try to find that particular team’s identity. And some years it takes a little bit longer to find than others, but I think tonight is sort of the way we got to play in order to have a chance.” — Brooks

Gadsden City Stat Sheet

Jovie Edwards had nine points — three 3-pointers — for the Titans. … Camille Jenkins and Brittney Watts both had eight points. … Mya Davis contributed seven points.

Bryant Stat Sheet

Jakina Hines had 13 points while Ieisha Merida totaled 10 points.
