The UAB women’s soccer team made it four weeks in a row with a Conference USA Player of the Week, as Kelsey Daugherty was tabbed the Goalkeeper of the Week and Audria Wood was named the Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Daugherty was also selected as the Conference USA Player of the Week last week and has already won the award three times this season. The Kennesaw, Ga., native is only the second athlete in league history to win the award three times in the same season.
“It’s always an honor to win this award,” Daugherty said. “Week in and week out my team works incredibly hard at training and our coaching staff always expects the most from us. Training with a keeper like Johanna (Popp) creates an ultra-competitive, high pressure environment that holds me accountable during every session.”
Daugherty opened the weekend with four saves in a 2-0 victory over Tennessee Tech en route to her third shutout of the season. She enters this week tied for first in Conference USA in shutouts and now has six in her career.
On Sunday against Belmont, Daugherty again made four saves on her way to a 1-1 draw in double overtime as the Blazers ran their unbeaten streak to four. Daugherty currently ranks third in the league in saves (40) and fifth in goals against average (0.80).
“Kelsey is playing at a high level and I couldn’t be happier for her,” UAB head coach Erica Demers said. “I thought Sunday was one of her best performances to date. She made sure to do all the little things right and controlled the back line for us.”
Wood played all 200 minutes over the weekend on the UAB back line and helped the Blazers surrender just one goal. The Gadsden, Ala., native also made several runs from the back and fired one shot against both Tennessee Tech and Belmont.
“When I came to UAB I was confronted with a new system and was worried that I wouldn’t be able to be successful,” Wood said. “Recognition like this show me that it’s working, because defending is a team effort. I’m excited to see how we continue to progress as a team.”
Wood is the first Blazer to win Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week since Angie Jimenez accomplished the feat in 2014.
“We are very appreciative of the recognition for both Audria and our back line,” Demers added. “Our defenders have consistently been the driving force for our team so far this season. This is a great award for her individually and even more importantly for all of our defenders.”
UAB puts its home unbeaten streak on the line Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers host Mississippi Valley State from BBVA Compass Field.
