Then there were two.
Westbrook Christian and Southside are the two lone undefeated teams in Etowah County. Sardis is the only team without a victory.
County teams finished 5-5 in the opening week of region play. Who did that impact the power rankings?
Remember, this list is not meant to be a head-to-head comparison, but a pound-for-pound-type ranking relative to each team’s schedule, classification and region.
10. Sardis (0-2)
Last week: lost to Douglas, 14-6
Next game: host Geraldine, Friday
Week 3 ranking: 9
First off, shoutout to Douglas, who is 3-0 for the first time since 1994. Now Sardis must turn its attention to Geraldine, a team that has made the playoffs each year since 2007.
9. Gaston (1-2)
Last week: lost to Southeastern 59-0
Next game: at Sand Rock, Friday
Week 3 ranking: 8
It was a tough start to region play for the Bulldogs. This week will not be any easier against Sand Rock.
8. West End (2-1)
Last week: lost to Spring Garden, 62-0
Next game: host Cleveland, Thursday
Week 3 ranking: 4
The Patriots were rolling before running into Spring Garden. Now West End has to regroup quick with a Thursday game this week.
7. Coosa Christian (1-2)
Last week: lost to Woodville, 46-38
Next game: at Gaylesville, Friday
Week 3 ranking: 6
The Conquerors kept it close, but eventually fell to Woodville. Now Coosa hits the road the next three weeks.
6. Glencoe (1-1)
Last week: Beat Weaver, 28-20
Next game: vs. Piedmont, Friday
Week 3 ranking: 10
The Yellow Jackets scored 14 points in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind victory. Next up is the top-ranked Piedmont Bulldogs, the defending Class 3A state champion.
5. Etowah (1-1)
Last week: beat Oneonta, 28-7
Next game: at Fultondale, Friday
Week 3 ranking: 7
It’s hard to imagine this being true, but the Blue Devils went without a point in their first six quarters of the season. But Etowah seemed to find its stride in the second half against Oneonta.
4. Gadsden City (2-1)
Last week: lost to Oak Mountain, 38-23
Next game: at Hoover, Friday
Week 3 ranking: 1
The Titans had some success offensively, but a turnover and the Eagles’ triple-option attack was too much to overcome. Gadsden City can’t dwell on the loss for long with a trip to Hoover coming up.
3. Hokes Bluff (1-1)
Last week: beat Pleasant Valley, 45-0
Next week: at Ohatchee, Friday
Week 3 ranking: 5
The Eagles got their first win in dominating fashion. Now comes a trip to Ohatchee, who has beaten Anniston and narrowly lost to Walter Wellborn in overtime (two 2019 semifinalists) the last two weeks.
2. Southside (3-0)
Last week: beat Pell City, 22-17
Next game: host Oxford, Friday
Week 3 ranking: 3
Another week, another come-from-behind victory for the Panthers. That’s not a bad trait to have with No. 2 Oxford, the defending 6A state champion, coming to town this week.
1. Westbrook Christian (2-0)
Last week: beat Sand Rock, 21-14
Next game: host Southeastern, Friday
Week 3 ranking: 2
The Warriors built a three-touchdown lead in the first half, then had to hold off Sand Rock. Westbrook moves on to Southeastern, which will be the first meeting between the two schools.
